How to use my DShowObj library

DirectShow is a nasty little fella, witha deceptively simple abstraction of filters and sources. There are many little facets about hooking up filters (and sometimes in what order) that you need to pay attention to. But when it works, relying on the windows system api (instead of individual codec apis) to take care of everything from mpgs to avis makes the world better. This includes the ability to quickly track forward and backward the movie, which is the main reason I investigated DirectShow as a movie player engine over OpenCV.

I created a library, "DShowObj", that encapsulates everything I need, including quickly setting up the windowless VMR, and the ability to seek forwards and backwards. Really, it's pretty generic as far as the guts, but with the addition of a function that can return a Bitmap object for display purposes in .Net forms.

I tried to install it recently in a new project, but ran into some problems. Long story short, I had to make sure that project properties included linking strmiids.lib.

Review of "The Incredible Hulk"... PR handling

So I just saw "Le Hulk Incroyable" with a buddy of mine. And I'll say this off the bat: I enjoyed it. As I expected, it wouldn't have me smiling like an idiot as my heart pounded in my chest like the first two Spider-Man movies (we'll leave S-P3 out of this for now), but it was good times, over all. I hear there were a lot of cuts, so I really wonder what was taken out of the movie besides... something I'll get to later. There were even two moments that had me do the fist-pump "YEAH!" or the lean forward gasp, but otherwise... standard fair. But that's not what I'm writing about. Rather it's the f-ing abomination (see what I did there) of the way they handled everything before the release of the movie. And it comes down to three points:

1) Too much pre-chatter about Norton/Letterier(whatever his name is)/Marvel conflict

2) The damn MASSIVE SPOILER of Stark's cameo

3) Letterier f-ing leaking that yes, there would be a Captain America appearance then, whoops, it got cut.

The first one item actually had little affect as to who I would feel going into the movie or coming out. I figured I would keep my standards low, prep for a dissapointment and get out. Hearing that Norton did a crap ton of re-writes on the Hulk (and seriously, do we trust Ed Norton to be sharp with the source material?) did not help things, but I knew I'd still see it. The movie was heavily influenced by the TV series, in fact there were many, many shots that looked like they came from the TV show opening. They even played a few bars of the theme song (and of course Lou Ferrigno was in it, sorry for butchering his name). But whatever, I've been able to supress that malarky and just come for the movie.

The second and third items are what really put a huge damper over my entire experience, especially to the point where I kept thinking as I watched the movie "This would be so much better if I didn't know this was going to/not going to happen."

Whoever the idiot is who decided that, for a commercial before the release of the movie, they'd go ahead and put Robert Downey Jr.'s mug WITHIN THE FIRST SECOND OF THE COMMERCIAL, should just quit his job. I mean, are you kidding me? Sure, it might have been leaked, and probably let out as soon as the first showing was over, but this... you don't do that. Do people remember Star Wars, Episode II? Primarily, that moment when Yoda waddles out of the shadows, then pulls his lightsaber from his belt with the freaking force? They didn't tell you it was happening, and maybe you heard about it as a rumor, but they never told you about it until well after the release. Why? Because that was a "fist-pump YEAH!" moment.

You never deny your audience that. You keep those moments closely guarded. You hint, maybe playfully say "it might happen, maybe not," but you never ever let those moments out. The fanboys will gossip, chatter, post on the message boards all about how they heard from a friend of a friend of someone on the set, but even then, there's still that... doubt, even in the fanboys. And then when you finally see it... it just pays off that much more, boosts the movie that much more (and this movie could use it).

This goes quadruple for comic book movies, where fanboys will see the worst movie just for that one fabled scene, and where surprises are as vital to the movie as they are the lifeblood of the original print source.

And along those lines, Louis Leterrier: you are a f-ing idiot. You probably cut that "Tony Stark" commercial yourself, didn't you? Because along with letting everyone know that Iron Man would show up in this movie, you just could help feeling like a bad ass and let loose that Captain America would be in your movie. Look what I got to do, world, I got to include these two guys in my movie, and I'm going to brag it up ahead of time. WOO!! Because I'm a douche.

He decides to forego giving the wink to the audience that would set off cheers and goes for the quick pat on the back, the fast tease. And the sad irony is, there is no Captain America in the movie, because he had to cut it out. So now he spoils his own movies, than can't deliver on his promises. And that just pisses me off.

He's already in the seat for Hulk 2 and 3, which saddens me, because this movie can be a lot better, but mainly because of these mistakes and the fact that I'm sure he'll do it again. This isn't the "Transporter" anymore. This isn't a throw away action movie, because now you have a built in, and very rabid fanbase that expects better from at least how their director treats the release of his movie.

Sadly, and ironically again, Marvel is okay with letting Jon Favreau go... because he actually reads (and writes) comics...

Twice before, my two friends and I (The Shane Avenger and Ed, the Big Red Goalpost) went through a demanding personal challenge we call "Twenty-Four-Hour Day". Granted, this is a redundant title, but it's fitting and explains what it's all about: the three of us hang out and stay awake for 24 straight hours.

No. Sleep.

When we conceived it, we were in high school, and (I like to believe) we had the energy to do it easily. But the first time we tried it, we were in college...

...let's just say that pulling an all-nighter studying uses a lot less energy than hanging out with these guys... and you usually get to sleep, even if you don't want to.

The second time was just last winter. That was... harder.

Why do I bring this up? (especially since this is the first post in a crap load of a long time?) I ran across this today:

On a related note: Down with Microsoft Office!  USE OPENOFFICE!!! (www.openoffice.org)  It's just like MS Office suite except that: 1) More programs 2)Open source, which (theoretically) means more quality development and bug fixes and 3) FREE.  Basically, everything MSO is not.  Plus it's cross platform (and I mean Windows, Mac, Linux, Unix).  Damn straight!

This is a band I saw at the 9:30 club called "Explosions in the Sky." Post-rock, instrumental. Dang good (the drummer def. worked for his money), the only problem I had was the use of a loop machine to "segue" between songs (at least take a longer sampling). Otherwise, good times for a band I had not heard of 3 days pre-show.

One of the opening bands, Paper Chase, was pretty interesting. There's at least one song I'd like to track down. It was kind of unnerving listening to a band i can only describe as "The lead singer from the Hot Hot Heat fronts for A Perfect Circle with guest members from AFI and System of a Down." (Mainly because Hot Hot Heat is a post-punk, much happier band).

Along time ago (high school), The Shane Avenger, Ed, and I decided that, as true men, we needed test with which to test are strength and endurance. So we decided on "24-hour day" (i know, i know, a redundant name). Basically, the three of us have to stay awake for 24 hours straight. It seems easy, but really... once 4 am rolls around and you've been laughing your asses off and playing video games all night... damn, the bed starts to look mighty tempting.

The first 24-hour day we did back in early college, and it turned scary. I know I almost didn't make it, and i remember loosing conciousness while WALKING on a treadmill. And of course, he laughter... the scary scary laughter that wouldn't stop...

The second 24-hour day took place this past winter (Jan'07). We killed off Marvel Ultimate Alliance and The Office (both seasons). Ed almost didn't make it. My theory: the girl on Ed's left there in the photo: the Dame Charissa

Hey kids-

So two things:

1) I suddenly realize that the salutation "Hey kids" reminds me alot of Binky the Clown from "Garfield and Friends" (the kick ass pre-car-ride/bus to school cartoon).  Perhaps my saying "Hey kids" is a subconcious invocation of... moving on...

2) Hamachi : Stay Connected

Baaaasically, take all the hard parts of setting up a network over the internet and make it FREAKING easy.  I installed this and Vine Server on my mac (and hamachiX for the GUI) and this and RealVNC my laptop(s) and in a combined set up time of approx. 30 mins, I can control my Mac, Hex, from Rincewind and Nartle (my school comp, i didn't name it), not to mention the fact that I've set up a LAN over the internet (next stop: FTP).

Point?  Geek out extreme.

In other news: Recently (last weekend), I went with one of my roommates (the one who flipped out and built a fort in our living room, a.k.a. the female one) and the shot-caller, the Nehal-er, to a magical toy store.  How magical?  I bought this:

    Deluxe Big Guy with Lt. Dwayne and Rusty

I was planning on saving my money for a few video games coming out (and this list is growing), but as soon as i saw it, I threw down the money and walked away with giant smile.  There was also a $180 deluxe Iron Giant, but maybe I'll save that for a graduation gift (from me to me...).

There is no point to this last thing (like there's ever a point to anything I write about).  I just needed to ride out a geek high.

I know a lot of the "old guard" have moved on (e.g. Kevin Rose made digg.com), but i like to dream of a better time when G4 DIES, except for X-play, which gets re-absorbed back into a new TechTV, and Adam and Morgan go back to being sarcastic while enjoying their jobs, instead of sarcastic and hating the world (seriously, only 13 year olds and reject goth kids are that pessimistically sarcastic).

Point is, i miss TechTV, and I'm waiting for G4 to pass on.

In other news:

So I've had this blog for a handfull of years now, but mostly it just sits here and withers away, similar to my ZD website. Meanwhile, I surf a crapload of newsblogs, find new crap, then post it to my IM away message/profile while sad ol "LifeInMono" cries quietly to itself.

I originally started this thing as an online outlet/journal of deep thoughts and feelings, but really... how many of those can you have in a month, and are driven/not embarrassed enough to post them online? Appearently one every two months, the way I post.

So I'm going to make a more concious effort to blog not just personal crap (and avalanches of cell-phone-photos), but more random, interesting to me crap.

Why?

P.S. I've always known Firefox was better than Safari (except for Sa's built in RSS reader), but after a few days using only Firefox on my parent's Mac... guess I'm making the switch full time. Hoorah.

1. To try out this Firefox extension ("Perfomancing"), as well as continue evaluating using a "all-on-a-thumb-drive" web browser

2. To remember (because I have the memory of a "goldfish") this nifty little thing about vector art being used to decorate spaces.
